Degree Requirements (Pre-Fall 2026)

Our advertised Course 18 program applies to all students who have been admitted to MIT with a Fall 2026 start date and beyond. If you are a current MIT student who began their undergraduate degree before Fall 2026, the below degree requirements apply:

Course 18 Requirements: Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

17 General Institute Requirements (GIRs) plus 180 units including two Communication-Intensive subjects in mathematics (CI-Ms)

General Math Option

  • 18.03 or 18.032 (formerly 18.034)
    [or 18.152 or 18.303]
  • 18.06 or 18.C06 (formerly 18.061) or 18.700 or 18.701
    ^^Differential Equations and Linear Algebra^^

Eight 12-unit Course 18 subjects beyond calculus and differential equations, of essentially different content, including at least six subjects with first decimal digit one or higher. Linear algebra will be counted as one of these eight subjects. [three distinct areas]

Applied Math Option

  • 18.03 or 18.032 [or 18.152 or 18.303]
  • 18.04 or 18.112
  • 18.06 or 18.C06 or 18.700 or 18.701
  • 18.200 or 18.200A
  • 18.300

At least four subjects from the following two groups, with at least one subject from each group:

  • Group 1: 18.204, 18.211 or 18.212, 18.400J or 18.404J, 18.410J, 18.424, 18.434, 18.453, 18.600, 18.650
  • Group 2: 18.303, 18.353J, 18.354J, 18.384, 18.352, 18.330

Pure Math Option

  • 18.03 or 18.032 [or 18.152 or 18.303]
  • 18.100
  • 18.701
  • 18.702
  • 18.901
  • 18.101 or 18.102 or 18.103

One of the following seminars: 18.104, 18.504, 18.704, 18.784, 18.904, or 18.994. With permission, a first-year graduate subject in theoretical mathematics may be substituted for the seminar (but will not satisfy the CI-M requirement).

Two additional 12-unit Course 18 subjects of essentially different content with first decimal digit one or higher.

Course 18C Requirements

17 General Institute Requirements (GIRs) plus 180 units including 2 CI-Ms

  • 18.03 or 18.032 (formerly 18.034) [or 18.152 or 18.303]
  • 18.06 or 18.C06 (formerly 18.061) or 18.700 or 18.701
  • 18.410J (6.1220, 6.046)
  • 6.100A (formerly 6.0001)
  • 6.1010 (formerly 6.009)
  • 6.1210 (formerly 6.006)

One subject from each of the following groups

  • 18.062J (6.1200, 6.042) or 18.200 (or 18.200A)
  • 18.400J (6.1400) or 18.404J (6.5400)
  • 6.1020 or 6.1800 or 6.3900 or 6.4100*, 6.4110

Restricted Electives

Four additional 12-unit subjects from Course 18 and one additional subject of at least 12 units from Course 6. The Course 6 subject may be a second subject from 6.1020, 6.1800, 6.3900, 6.4100*, 6.4110; it can also be 6.1040, 6.1600, 6.1910, 6.3800, or, with the permission of the Department of Mathematics, an advanced Course 6 subject with sufficient mathematical content. The overall program must consist of subjects of essentially different content and must include at least five Course 18 subjects with first decimal digit one or higher.

* 6.4100 was renumbered as 6.4110.

Communication-Intensive Subjects in Mathematics

2 subjects from Group A or 1 subject from each (A + B):

  • Group A: 18.104, 18.204, 18.384, 18.424, 18.434, 18.504, 18.604 [SP 2024: 18.S096], 18.704, 18.784, 18.821, 18.904, or 18.994
  • Group B: 8.06, 14.18, 14.33, 18.100P, 18.100Q, 18.200, (or 6.1800 for Course 18C)
