Degree Requirements

1. Coursework

Students must take 6 total classes from the below selection of courses. For approval of substitute courses, please email Charlotte Rubel (crubel@mit.edu) with the course number and a description of the mathematical content

18.226 Probabilistic Methods in Combinatorics
18.338 Eigenvalues of Random Matrices
18.408 Topics in Theoretical Computer Science
18.655 Mathematical Statistics
18.656[J] Mathematical Statistics: a Non-Asymptotic Approach
18.657 Topics in Statistics
18.675 Theory of Probability

All courses must be graduate units and taken for a letter grade (no pass/fail).

Classes taken during the Bachelor are acceptable but cannot be double counted towards both Bachelor and Master.

2. Plan of Study

Students must submit a document with the following information by ADD DATE of their first term:

All intended classes
Proposed thesis title
Proposed thesis topic: students should write one or two paragraphs describing their proposed research
Thesis advisor signature (students must choose their advisor by this date)

To submit your plan of study, please email it to Charlotte Rubel (crubel@mit.edu) or drop it off on her desk in the MAS office (2-110) during office hours.

3. Thesis

Students will write and submit a Master’s thesis to the MIT Libraries within their graduation term. They will also participate in a thesis defense with other students—all defenses will take place on the same date in the same room (details will be sent out each semester).

MMAD students will follow graduate deadlines for “degrees other than doctoral” or “advanced degrees”: registrar.mit.edu/calendar

Thesis Proposal Form: due early February
Signed by the thesis advisor and Philippe Rigollet as the MMAD chair.
Thesis Approval Form: due after the thesis defense
Signed by the thesis advisor and Philippe Rigollet as the MMAD chair.

Theses must be sent to Charlotte Rubel (crubel@mit.edu) by the appropriate deadline and must follow all library formatting guidelines.
