[04-07-2014] It is my bad that Problem 4 in Problem set #6 was initially flawed, so I'll excuse everyone for missing points on this. Good news -- when determining the final grade, I will exclude your worst week's score from consideration. (So if you skipped any problem set, I'll simply ignore one missed week for you.)

[03-11-2014] I'm glad that people who couldn't attend the class somehow still submitted their work by email. I appreciate that you continue to keep the deadline for each problem set. (As usual late homework is discouraged and may not be accepted.)

[02-25-2014] From PSet 2 and on, John Binder will be grading homework. Let's welcome our grader! The grading scheme is as follows.

Plus = excellent solution

Check-Plus = missing a small mathematical details, or mathematically correct but overly complex or difficult to follow

Check = Mostly correct but missing important details

Check-minus = incomplete, ignores important cases, or a great deal of holes in the proof.

Minus = Solution is absent.

The final grade is based on the understanding of the material you exhibit through your solutions. I observed that everyone performed at a high level on PSet 1, and if the trend continues then everyone will get an A, or A- at least.

You are encouraged to work on homework in groups and share ideas. However write up your own solutions and give the names of those who you collaborate with; otherwise you will not be given credit. Please submit your work in class or to my office (E18-426) by 9:30 on the deadline date.

You are exempt from homework if you are a graduate student who passed the quals, or of course if you are a listener. However my recommendation is that the more you work on the problem sets and the exercises in Gee's notes, the more you will get out of the course.

The problem set will be posted at least 5 days before the due date. (Links will appear.)
