Topic: Toward planetary brain scans, high-resolution monitoring and measuring of the global ocean and sea-ice system
Abstract This talk will review work underway to develop a high-resolution monitoring and measuring system for tracking the ocean and sea-ice climate of the Earth. The work centers on combining large observational data sets with state-of-the-art numerical simulation tools in a formal mathematical optimization framework. This is a major computational Earth science challenge, which involves bringing together large-scale computational resources, advanced algorithmic and computational science concepts.
