Richard Dudley received the A.B. from Harvard in 1952, and the Ph.D. from Princeton in 1962, under the direction of Gilbert Hunt, Jr., and J. Edward Nelson. Following an assistant professorship at U.C. Berkeley, Professor Dudley joined the MIT mathematics faculty in 1967 (professor in 1972). Professor Dudley concentrates on problems in probability theory and mathematical statistics. In 1991 he was a Guggenheim fellow. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, and Member of the International Statistical Institute.
