Emmy Murphy

Emmy Murphy joined MIT as a CLE Moore Instructor in 2012. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Her research specialty is in symplectic and contact geometry, particularly studying high dimensional flexibility phenomena. She is also a specialist in h-principles outside of  the symplectic/contact world.

She received her PhD from Stanford university under Yakov Eliashberg in 2012. Her thesis defined  the concept of loose Legendrians in high dimensional contact manifolds and demonstrated their flexibility.

During 2009-2010 she spent a year as a member at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.  She received her BS is mathematics in 2007 from the University of Nevada, Reno. During her time  there she wrote two research papers; one in fractal geometry, and one concerning approximation methods for the differential geometry of surfaces.
