Quantum group representations: a combinatorist's-eye view

A recent result in the representation theory of quantum groups describes a familty of finite-dimensional representations which, it turns out, are completely determined by combinatorial properties. The story of the conjecture and proof involves symmetric functions in a way appealing to both combinatorists and representation theorists.
