• Added a hint to P16 and slightly clarified P5.
  • Good luck on Monday, you probably don't need it!
  • Graded Pset10 is going out -- sorry for the curtness.
  • A small typo in P17 corrected (thanks Panos).
  • Questions for final up.
  • 6 May, 2016: P10.4 clarified a little.
  • 3 May, 2016: Hints added to Pset10
  • Correction to P10.3, the word `isometric' removed since it was wrong.
  • Problem set 10 is up, hints will follow on Monday.
  • No lecture on 28 April; it would have been Kuiper's theorem. Sorry about that (but I am enjoying the south of France). I will make some changes to the notes on Kuiper's theorem for anyone who needs a mathematical fix.
  • Guest lecturer on 26 April will be Simon Dyatlov.
  • 18 April, 2016: Revised version of Problems9. I moved some material between two of the questions, and (I hope) clarified things a bit, but it is essentially unchanged in content except for an added hint.
  • 15 April, 2016: Problem set 9 up -- due 29 April.
  • Added a section to Chapter 3 on the spectral projection for a bounded self-adjoint operator. I do not plan to lecture on this.
  • 15 April, 2016: Added a hint to P8.5, since I gave it to several people who asked.
  • 14 April, 2016: Typos fixed in Problems8, one at least was bad. Thanks Sruthi and Yang.
  • 13 April, 2016: Updated Chapter 3, now includes polar decomposition (but not retraction of invertibles to unitaries yet).
  • 9 April. Problem set 8 up, some notes on polar decomposition will appear (asap).
  • 9 April: Due to computer problems (meaning I forgot to bring the charger with me to Vermont, duh) acknowledgement of problem sets and replies to email messages will be delayed until Sunday evening.
  • Problem set 7 is up.
  • Problem set 7 will be due April 8, then weekly after that.
  • Let me repeat: There is no Test2.
  • Problem set 5 should be acknowledged by now and you should have your graded Test.
  • Problem set 6 is up, due at the end of Spring Break but you can of course do it sooner.
  • 11 March, 2016: I gave a rather confused proof of the sufficiency of `small tails' for compactness of a closed bounded subset yesteday. In partial penance I have revised the corresponding section 13 of Chapter 3 of the notes. I also fixed an erroneous statement about subspcaes of finite codimension.
  • Problem set 5 up, thanks for the reminder Cyril!
  • Date of final exam -- May 16 -- added, thanks Dan.
  • If anyone needs their grade on the first test urgently (it being Add date) just ask.
  • Added hints for P4.4 and P4.5 since I gave them to people who asked.
  • I added a hint to P4.1 too, or a reminder perhaps. Note that the problems on the test will come from the first five in each of the problem sets, so you only have 20 problems to get right!
  • Since there were several requests, I added a (big) hint to P4.2. If you don't get it, or something else -- ask!
  • Problem set 4 is up and contains a message about the test on 1 March.
  • Problem set 2 has been returned by email.
  • Test dates corrected to 1 and 30 March (which they always were in the Lecture listing).
  • Problem set 3 is up, due 19 Feb in the usual sense.
  • Note that the brief descriptions of what I actually did in lecture can be found under `Lectures' below.
  • All on-time solutions to Problem set 2 should have been acknowledged by now -- if you did not hear back, drop me a note.
  • For Lecture 3, read Chapter 1 section on completion, Chapter 2 first two sections.
  • Problem set 2 is up now and due on Friday 12 Feb in the usual sense.
  • For Lecture 2, read Chapter 1 Sect 3-5 and I may start on Sect 6.
  • I will ask in lecture whether we should use stellar or piazza or both.
  • Problem set 1 is up and due Friday Feb 5.
  • Does anyone want to suggest an interactive site to discuss things. As I said in class you are encouraged to come/write to me with questions.
  • I hope the pointers are now working -- let me know if things are still messed up.
