Both teams competing for the Department of Mathematics were winners in
the
2007 Mathematical Contest in Modeling: Sophomores, Thomas Mildorf, Eric Price,and
Alex Schwender, earned the second highest ranking of Meritorious Winner (top 13%), while
our seniors, Andrew Spann, Daniel Kane, and Dan Gulotta, won the highest ranking
of Outstanding Winner (top 1%), for third year in a row, as well as the SIAM Prize for
Best Paper. In 2007, there were 949 teams competing from 12 different countries (limited to
two per department, and four per university).
The team of Kane, Gulotta, and Spann (pictured above in 2006) had an
unprecendented four-year streak of success in the MCM:
- 2004 Meritorious Winner and Ben Fusaro Award (Most Creative Solution)
- 2005 Outstanding Winner
- 2006 Outstanding Winner and INFORMS Award (Best Paper in Discrete Math)
- 2007 Outstanding Winner and SIAM Prize (Best Paper)
