Galois theory of spectra

The plan is to follow a paper by John Rognes titled Galois extensions of structured ring spectra. In it, he develops the theory of Galois extensions of commutative ring spectra, analogous to that of rings. We will meet on Tuesdays at 4:30 pm, in room 2-135.

We plan to start with several introductory talks, covering various aspects of spectra, then move to the paper itself. The first talk will be March 15, and we are very lucky to have Stefan Schwede, all the way from Germany, to give the first talk.

Program:

March 15: Stefan Schwede: An introduction to stable homotopy theory
March 22: Spring break
March 29: Peter Lee: Spectra as a symmetric monoidal category
April 5: Michael Ching: Structured ring spectra
April 12: Teena Gerhardt: Bousfield localization of spectra
April 19: Francesca Deserti: Homotopy fixed points
The rest of the program is TBD, but the rest of the talks will include Galois theory.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact John Francis,  jnkf(at)math.mit.edu or me, vigleik(at)math.mit.edu.
