References for lecture 4

"The geometry of graphs and some of its algorithmic applications" by Linial, London, and Rabinovich. It appeared in Combinatorica vol 15 no 2 (1995) as well as in 1994 FOCS.

I am also using a survey paper by David Shmoys called "Cut problems and their application to divide and conquer" that appears in a new book called "approximation algorithms" edited by Dorit Hochbaum. I found the survey on Shmoys's homepage (he is in the OR department at Cornell).
