Photographs from my recent travels      (click the location for more photos of the trip)

Tanzania, June 2009

Sophia organized a Safari across the northern circuit of Tanzania in June of 2009. We spent 12 days touring with Salvatory where we spotted (okay, mostly Salvatory spotted and we looked where he indicated) elephant, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard, rhino, hippo, hyena, and the list goes on. It was an amazing and truly unforgettable trip. These aren't all of my photographs from that trip (I took over 4000), but there are at least a few of each animal.

Zanzibar, June 2009

Before heading off on our Safari, Sean and I spent 5 days on Zanzibar, off the eastern coast of Tanzania. Most of our time there was spent taking photographs in Stone Town, but we also went out to Jozani Forrest and did a touristy but fun Spice Tour. The island was well worth the visit, and we wouldn't have been unhappy to have had a few more days to explore it. This is a sampling of the photos Sean and I took while in Zanzibar.

Valparaiso, June 2008

I attended a math conference in Valparaiso, Chile in 2008. It was my first trip to South America, and I definitely need to go back. The beaches were beautiful, but we didn't make much use of them in the winter. Still, the town was nice to explore, especially up in the hills. Most of the pictures are from the conference excursion into the hills and up to Pablo Neruda's house, but I also managed to get to the Rapa Nui Museum which was very interesting.

Maker Faire, 2008

The Maker Faire is the annual DIY Festival held in the Bay Area. There are tons of vendors exhibiting the latest and greatest homemade gadgets. The event, organized by the folks from Make Magazine, is designed to celebrate things people create themselves. It's loads of fun and can lead to interesting new hobbies.

Banff, September 2007

The Banff International Research Station (BIRS) hosts mathematics conferences in the heart of Banff, Canada. I was there in September for a conference on Macdonald polynomials, and I cannot wait to go back for another conference. Lake Louise is unbelievable, and running and hiking in the area around Banff was just stunning. Surprisingly, even with the plentiful distraction I managed to have a productive trip as well. All the more reason to go back!

Tianjin, July 2007

FPSAC was held in Tianjin, China in July of 2007. It was definitely a unique experience being there, but I'm not sure I'm in a rush to go back. Some of the places I visited on excursions were amazing, but my store of Clif Bars wasn't quite adequate to keep me from going hungry. The locals were all incredibly hospitable, though, which certainly made the trip more enjoyable.

Cape Town, December 2006

Sean and I went to Cape Town to celebrate David's birthday in December 2006. We did all my favorite things, like eating at Giovanni's and going to Green Point Marker, but we also took a few day trips around the cape. Sophia organized a Baboon walk for us, where we followed a troupe around for an afternoon, and Sean and I went out to Boulders Beach for a day to watch the penguins.

Spain, August 2006

I was awarded a travel grant to attend the 2006 ICM (think World Cup of Mathematics) held in Madrid, so Sean came along for the trip. We went to Barcelona as well, which I absolutely loved. There was a festival going on in the neighborhood where we stayed that was more like a week long block party covering a dozen blocks. The art museums were amazing, both in Barcelona and Madrid, and the food was pretty tasty as well. We had 10 days in Madrid and 3 in Barcelona, though if we had it to do over again we'd reverse that, or at least even it out a bit.

Our Wedding, Pi Day, 2004

Sean and I were married in 2004 on March 14 at 1:59pm. We were married by Jim Illig, who chose a fantastic overlook in the Presidio of San Francisco. Sadly, the spot is now closed and the deck has been removed due to erosion problems. The view was spectacular though. These are a few shots our families took.

Climbing Trips

We don't take too many photos on our climbing trips, what with all the climbing and belaying. Still here are a few shots we managed to take on some recent trips to Bishop in 2003 and the Red River Gorge in 2008.

In a strict sense photography can never be abstract, for the camera is incapable of synthetic integration.
