Ongoing math outreach in the community

Girls' Angle

Advisory board member and mentor 2008-present

Girls' Angle is a club whose mission is to "foster and nurture girls' interest in mathematics and empower them to be able to tackle any field no matter the level of mathematical sophistication". One of the facets of the club is a series of problem solving meets for girls. There is also an affiliated network for women who use mathematics in their professional lives.

Outreach conferences

WIMIN09

Plenary speaker 2009

I will be one of the two plenary speakers at WIMIN '09: a conference on Women In Mathematics In New England at Smith College. This broad conference is directed towards undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the area. More information can be found on the conference site.

4-H Career Explorations

Mathematics workshop organizer 2007

I led the math department's first involvement in the annual 4-H Career Explorations conference held at Cornell. The conference aims to introduce youth from rural areas throughout New York State, traditionally underrepresented in post-secondary institutions, to a university setting and to encourage them to continue their education. I recruited undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members and we worked together to build three workshops: (1) Optimal strategies for Travelling Salesman and "Deal or No Deal"; (2) Error-Detecting and Error-Correcting Codes; and (3) Winning strategies for dominoes, Hex, and Nim.

Expanding Your Horizons

Mathematics workshop organizer 2004-2006

I helped organize, plan, and run the math department's workshop at the annual Expanding Your Horizons conference at Cornell for girls in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. The topics for our workshops included using probability theory to predict likely events; soap bubbles and minimal surfaces; and winning strategies for games like Nim. I created websites outlining the activities and describing the mathematics behind each of the workshops to allow more people to benefit from them.

Service within my departments

MIT Logic Seminar

Co-organizer 2008-present

This research seminar meets weekly and serves the greater Boston region. Talks and information may be found at the seminar website.

MIT Women in Mathematics Lecture Series

Co-organizer 2009-present

This lecture series, aimed at a wide audience including advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students, highlights women mathematicians and their work. Talks and information may be found at the website.

Prospective Graduate Student Weekend

Organizer and leader 2003-2006

I organized and ran (along with a committee) the recruitment weekend for students admitted to the PhD program in the math department at Cornell. This included the logistical aspects (travel, housing, food) as well as programming to showcase the Cornell math department (special lectures, tours, faculty meetings).
