8.1 Definition of Curl

The important vector derivative of a vector field v is given by its curl, (curl v) which is defined to be (v). Specifically, it is defined by

(This is messy but, the second and third coefficients are cyclic shifts of the first, which means they need not be remembered separately. The messiness lies completely in the nature of the cross product.)
