Sug Woo Shin recently joined the department faculty (July 2011) as Assistant Professor of Mathematics. He received the PhD from Harvard University in 2007 under the supervision of Richard Taylor. He completed the BSc in Mathematics at the Seoul National University. Prior to university study, Sug Woo was selected for two gold and one bronze medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Sug Woo Shin is a number theorist, a leading specialist at the forefront of the Langlands program. In 2007 he received a Clay Liftoff Fellowship and spent a year and a half at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), before taking up appointment as a L. E. Dickson Instructor at the University of Chicago. He returned to IAS for the 2010-11 year prior to coming to MIT. In 2013 he received the Alfred P. Sloan fellowship.
