Harold Stark was on the MIT Mathematics Faculty from 1969-93, and is currently at the University of California at San Diego. Following the BS from Caltech (1961) and the MS from U.C. Berkeley (1963), he received the PhD in Mathematics from U. C. Berkeley in 1964 under the supervision of Derrick Henry Lehmer. He served on the faculty of the University of Michigan from 1965-69.

Professor Stark is a number theorist, known for solution of the Gauss class number 1 problem, and for the Stark conjecture. He continues research on zeta functions in graph theory.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1983) and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences (2007).
