I-9 Forms

Headquarters is the first office to stop by, room 2-236. There you will obtain an I-9 form (employment verification form). The headquarters office will need to see your original documents. For foreign nationals, these would be your unexpired passport with appropriate visa. If you are an American citizen, we'll need either an unexpired passport or a driver's license and an original social security card or birth certificate.

Note: If you are being paid by MIT, you will complete your intake paperwork, including the I-9 form and any tax forms, in the Human Resources Office, E-19-215. If your home country has a tax treaty with the US (or if you wish to see if it does) please see Steve Connelly, NE49-3131, (617-452-2794) before completing the withholding forms.

Registering at Scholar's Office for those with Visas

If you are a Foreign National, you should visit the International Scholar's Office, 4-105, so that they may register you, and review your passport and visa status. If you are on an F-1 practical training visa status, we may eventually need to apply for a change of visa status. Please see Camille C. Carino in Headquarters.

Please note that there is a difference between the visa stamp in your passport and your actual visa status(B-1,F-1,J-1,H-1). The white I-94 card you received upon your entry indicates your actual visa status and expiration . Those who arrive on visa waiver will also have such a card marked W-B or W-T. It is important that you check with Headquarters or the Scholar's Office before traveling abroad or before accepting other speaking or visiting offers at US Institutions. Many visas have restrictions which may prevent you for being appointed or paid at a second Institute.

If you have a tourist visa, indicated B-2 or W-T:-you are on the most prohibitive US visa in regard to payment or appointment at MIT! Please check with Headquarters as soon as possible.
