How do I get a X Windows session running on my Windows machine at home?

1. Make sure you have a athena account (if not you can register for one)

2. Make sure you have certrificates (if not : get them)

3. Make sure you have the ssh client software installed

4. Go to web.mit.edu/software/win.html and download X-Win32 5.4.2 (link near the bottom of the page)

5. Start the ssh program and go to Edit menu and select Settings.

In the left hand panel select Tunneling

Check the box next to "Tunnel X11 connections" and click OK

6. Start up x-win (click cancel if a window pops up)

7. Connect to your desired math department host via ssh

8. type setenv DISPLAY your.ip.address.here:0.0 (replace your.ip.address.here with your IP address or hostname)

(If you are using Windows XP Ensure that that firewall that comes default with windows is turned off.)

10. Fire up your favorite x-windows application.
