Connecting to the MIT Math Department from Windows XP Home/Professional

 

***Please note that not all steps have screenshots.***

 

1. Click on Start in the lower left hand corner of the screen.

2. Click on Control Panel on the right hand menu.



3. Click on "Switch to Classic View" in the left panel.


4. Click on the Phone and Modems Options icon.


5. Under the Dialing Rules tab click on the Edit button.
6. Fill in any relevant information specific to your home phone.
7. Click OK.
8. Click the Modems tab on the Phone and Modem Options window.
9. At least one modem should be listed.


10. If no modem is listed go to Control Panel and double click Add Hardware to attempt to get Windows to find your modem.
11. Click Network Connections icon


12. In the left panel click "Create a new connection".


13. The New Connection Wizard appears.
14. Click Next.


15. Ensure "Connect to the Internet" is selected and click Next.


16. Ensure "Set up my connection manually" is selected and click Next.


17. Ensure "Connect using a dial-up modem" is selected and click Next.


18. Under the ISP Name dialog box enter "MIT Math Dept"
19. Under the Phone Number dialog box enter "6172587179" (Please note if you are outside of the 617 area code you will need to put a 1 in front of 617).
20. Click Next.
21. Under the Internet Account Information screen leave the Username and Password fields blank.
22. Ensure the "Make this default Internet connection" box is checked if the Math Deptartment is your only means of connecting to the Internet.
23. Ensure the "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection" is unchecked.
24. Click Next.


25. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard screen check "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" and click Finish.


26. The Connect MIT Math Dept window appears. Leave the User name and Password fields blank and click Properties.


27. Click the Security tab.
28. Under Interactive logon and scripting, ensure the "Show terminal window" box is checked.


29. Click the Networking tab.
30. In the pull-down menu under "Type of dial-up server I am calling:" Ensure "PPP:Windows 95/98/NT4/2000,Internet" is selected.
31. Under "This connection uses the following items": click to highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) (ensure it is checked) and click Properties.


32. Ensure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
33. Check "Use the following DNS server addresses:".
34. In the "Preferred DNS server:" dialog box enter the following "18.87.0.15".
35. In the "Alternate DNS server:" dialog box enter the following "18.87.0.28".
36. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP Properties) window.


37. Click OK to close the MIT Math Dept Properties window.
38. On the Connect MIT Math Dept window click Dial.


39. When the After Dial Terminal window comes up, enter your username and password.

40. If the After Dial Terminal window displays "Terminal type? [linux]" press Enter.
41. You should see a prompt like: laurent.mit.edu::~>
42. Type this exactly: slirp -P
43. Hit Enter.


44. Click Done


44. You may now use Internet Explorer or any other network application

45. When you are finished with your session, right click on the network icon in the lower right hand corner and select "Disconnect"

46. In the future you can double-click the MIT Math Dept icon to connect to the Math Dept and the Internet.
