Connecting to the MIT Math Department from Windows 2000
- Click on
My Computer
- Click on
Control Panel
- Click on
Network and Dial Up Connections
- Click on
Make New Connection
- If it prompts you for your
Location Information
- Fill in this info, as appropriate for you.
- Click
OK.
- The
Network Connection Wizard window will pop up.
- Click
Next.
- Select
Dial Up to the Internet
- Select "
I want to set up my Internet Connection Manually..."
- Select "
I connect through a phone line and a modem"
If the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard opens...
- When it asks to detect your modem, click next
- Follow the steps it guides you through...
- Then it returns to the Internet connection wizard...
If your modem is already set up, or after the modem wizard finishes...
- Enter 617 for "
Area Code" and 258-8140 for "Telephone Number"
- Click on the button that says "
Advanced"
- Select "
Log on manually"
- Click the "
Addresses" tab at the top of the window.
- Under "
IP address," Set it to obtain ip address automatically
- Under "
DNS server address," click "Always use the following:"
- Enter 18.87.0.15 for
Primary DNS Server.
- Enter 18.70.0.160 for
Secondary DNS Server.
- Click "
OK"
- When you are back in the
Internet Connection Wizard, click "Next"
- Enter your username and password, then click "
Next"
- Enter "
Math Dept. PPP" for Connection name.
- When it asks you to set up a mail account, click
No.
- Click "
Next"
- Uncheck the "
Connect Immediately" checkbox, then click "Finish"
- Right-click on the new icon that says "
Math Dept. PPP"
- Click on "
Properties"
- Click on the "
Security" tab at the top of the window.
- In the "
Interactive logon and scripting" area, make sure "Show terminal window" is checked.
- Click "
OK"
- Now double-click on the
Math Dept. PPP icon.
- In the window that comes up, click "
Dial"
- When the terminal window comes up, enter your username and password.
- You should see a prompt like:
runge::~>
- Type this exactly:
slirp -P
- Hit
Enter.
- Click on
Continue
You should now be connected to the internet via the math department. You can now open
internet applications (Netscape, SSH, etc) as usual.
Connecting to the Math Dept with HyperTerminal from Windows 2000
HyperTerminal is a windows program for connecting via modem through a text only
terminal session. To set up hyperterminal, do the following:
- Click
Start menu, then Programs, then Accessories,
then Communications then Hyperterminal.
- Double click on the
HyperTerminal icon
- In the
Connection Description box under Name put "MIT
Math".
- Click
OK.
- Under the
Connect To box under Phone Number enter
"258-8140" or "258-7179". If you live outside of the 617 area code,
put "617" in the Area Code box.
- Click
OK.
- Click
Dial.
- You should get a login screen, login and start using your account.
- When you are done type
exit at the prompt .
- Under the
File menu, select Exit.
- For the first time you set this up it will ask you
"Do you want to save
session MIT Math?" Click Yes.
- In the future to connect, click
Start, then Programs, then Accessories,
then Communications, then the second Hyperterminal, then MIT
Math.
