Connecting to the MIT Math Department from Windows 95/98

Ensure that the dial-up adapter is installed as follows:

  1. Choose Settings from the Start menu
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Double-click on the Network icon. A network window should then appear.

There should be a line that says dialup adapter, if not:

  1. From the Configuration Tab, choose Add to add a component.
  2. Choose to add an Adapter.
  3. Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft, and you should see the dialup adapter in the right hand listbox.
  4. Double-click on the Dialup adapter, or choose OK. You will now return to the configuration tab.

There are other ways of establishing a connection to the MIT Math Dept from Windows 95/98, but this is the easiest.

  1. Open Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications->Dial Up Networking
  2. Double click "Make New Connection"
  3. Name this connection "Math Dept. PPP"
  4. Select your modem in the menu for "Select a device:"
  5. Click "Next"
  6. For Phone Number, Area Code is 617, then 258-8140
  7. Click "Next"
  8. Click "Finish"
  9. Right-click on the icon that says "Math Dept. PPP"
  10. Click "Properties"
  11. Click the "Server Types" (or if you are using Windows ME, click the "Networking") tab at the top of the window.
  12. Make sure the "TCP/IP" box is checked, under "Allowed network protocols" If any other protocols such as "NetBEUI" or "IPX/SPX Compatible" are checked, click on the boxes to the left of them to uncheck them.
  13. Click the "TCP/IP Settings" button.
  14. Click "Specify an IP Address"
  15. In the "IP address" field, enter: 18.87.0.90
  16. Click "Specify name server addresses"
  17. In the "Primary DNS Server" field enter: 18.87.0.15
  18. In the "Secondary DNS Server" field enter: 18.70.0.160
  19. Click "OK"
  20. Click the "General" tab at the top of the window.
  21. Click "Configure" under the section "Connect using"
  22. Click the "Options" tab at the top of that window.
  23. Click the box next to "Bring up terminal window after dialing "
  24. Click "OK"
  25. Click "OK"
  26. Double click the "Math Dept. PPP" icon.
  27. Click "Connect"
  28. Once a connection is made, a terminal window will open, type in your username and password when prompted to do so.
  29. At the prompt (ie., severi::~> or runge::~>) type in the following exactly as it appears:
    slirp -P

    and press return

  30. Click "Continue"

At this time you can open up Netscape, Internet Explorer or SSH.

To disconnect from the Math Dept, double click on the icon that looks like two computers connected together on the right hand corner of your task bar, then click disconnect.

Connecting to the Math Dept with HyperTerminal from Windows 98

HyperTerminal is a windows program for connecting via modem through a text only terminal session. To set up hyperterminal, do the following:

  1. Click Start menu, then Programs, then Accessories, then Communications then Hyperterminal.
  2. Double click on the HyperTerminal icon
  3. In the Connection Description box under Name put "MIT Math".
  4. Click OK.
  5. Under the Connect To box under Phone Number enter "258-8140" or "258-7179". If you live outside of the 617 area code, put "617" in the Area Code box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Dial.
  8. You should get a login screen, login and start using your account.
  9. When you are done type exit at the prompt .
  10. Under the File menu, select Exit.
  11. For the first time you set this up it will ask you "Do you want to save session MIT Math?" Click Yes.
  12. To save time in the future you can right click on the mit-math icon and select Send To, Desktop(create shortcut). This will create a icon on your desktop that you can double click in the future then click dial to connect.
