Connecting to the MIT Math Department from Linux
There are currently two working options for dialing from Linux to the new servers.
These are:
1. Phil Hirschorn's Dialup Scripts

2. kppp
To use kppp you must have kde installed.
You can download and install kde from http://www.kde.org.
Once installed:
- Type kppp from the command line or find it on your menu.
- Click Setup.
- Click New
- Click Dialog Setup
- In Connection Name field type: MIT Math
- Click Add, enter phone number 617-258-7179, then click OK.
- You may also use 617-258-8140
- Click Authentications drop down menu and select Terminal-Based.
- Click the IP tab at top.
- Click the Static IP Address button and enter:
- 18.87.0.90 as IP
- 255.255.255.0 as Subnet.
- Click the Gateway tab at top and select Static Gateway button and enter 18.87.0.1 in the box.
- Leave Assign The Default Route to this Gateway box checked.
- Click DNS tab and enter: mit.edu in Domain Name box.
- Click the Manual button under configuration section. Enter 18.87.0.15 in DNS box, then click add.
- Click OK at bottom.
- Click OK again and you should now see the new entry in the kppp box.
- Click Connect and give the modem time to dial and connect.
- Once in, a terminal window will pop up. Enter your username and password. Then use terminal type VT100.
- Now type slirp -P and then click OK or Connect button at the bottom and it will log
you onto the network.
- Once complete you can use Netscape. You man also SSH into the Math Department from a terminal window
